The Systems Engineering degree is a truly unique program focused on students interested in the areas of Robotics, Factory Automation, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT), 3D Vision, and other advanced manufacturing technologies. Based on extensive input from industry leaders, this first-of-its-kind program is structured to prepare students with the balance of skills required for this high-tech field of study. There is a strong mix of hand-on laboratory and theoretical classes in the technical areas of the program with the flexibility to focus on a core sub area. In addition to the labs, the program includes upperclassmen projects to connect the obtained learning to a practical implementation. Since success in this area isn’t limited to just technical skills, the program includes elements of project management and problem solving – two areas which are used daily in the manufacturing space.  Of course, like all students at CofC, the program includes a core foundation of liberal arts classes that CofC is known for and an option to study abroad in the UK and Ireland. The Systems Engineering degree program at CofC is designed to make its graduates ready to immediately make an impact in industry after completion, or to build on learning for more advanced study in this high-growth area of the economy.

Mission Statement

The Systems Engineering degree program at the College of Charleston aims to support economic development in the Lowcountry of South Carolina and beyond by producing a well-rounded, technical problem solver with excellent communication and leadership skills who can effectively contribute to the advancement of manufacturing, engineering, and industrial firms.

Program Educational Objectives

  • Pursue graduate studies or careers in systems engineering and/or related fields and contribute to the economy of South Carolina and the nation.
  • Function effectively in a team-based environment by demonstrating strong communication and leadership skills within a strong ethical framework.
  • Adapt and learn new technologies and engineering competencies in the ever-evolving global manufacturing, industrial, and engineering environments.

Student Learning Outcomes

In the context of Systems Engineering, students will demonstrate:

  1. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
  2. An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
  3. An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
  4. An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
  5. An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
  6. An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
  7. An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.

Accreditation

The College of Charleston is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). The Systems Engineering program at the College of Charleston was developed to comply with the additional ABET-EAC (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology - Engineering Accreditation Commission) accreditation guidelines with input from several consultants in Academia and Industry. Per ABET guidelines, once a student graduates from this program, ABET-EAC accreditation can be attain and will be applied retroactively so that all students graduating from this program will be graduating from an "ABET accredited" program. We anticipate our first graduates around May 2023. The College of Charleston's Computer Science degree program is ABET accredited; the College possesses a wealth of knowledge on this front and does not foresee any obstacles in gaining ABET accreditation. However, if somehow a student graduates and this program is unable to gain accreditation, she/he will still be able to take the FE (fundamentals of engineering) and PE (professional licensed engineer) exams upon completing an education evaluation by the South Carolina State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors.
